Allerdale Borough Council is one of the three councils that made an Expression of Interest in the MRWS process. It represents people living in the north of West Cumbria, including the towns of Workington, Maryport, Cockermouth, Keswick, Wigton and Silloth.

Copeland Borough Council

Copeland Borough Council is one of the three councils that made an Expression of Interest in the MRWS process. It represents people living in the south of West Cumbria from Millom up to Whitehaven, and includes towns and villages such as Egremont, Cleator Moor and Seascale.

Cumbria County Council represents the interests of people living across the whole of Cumbria. It made an Expression of Interest in this process on behalf of West Cumbria.

Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM)

CoRWM provides independent scrutiny and advice to the Government and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority on proposals, plans and programmes for delivering geological disposal of radioactive waste (including robust interim storage) as the long-term management of the UK’s higher activity wastes.

Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC)

The Department of Energy and Climate Change is the Government department with responsibility for nuclear issues, including geological disposal, and funds the West Cumbria MRWS Partnership.

Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA)

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority is the implementing organisation that is responsible for planning and delivering a geological disposal facility.

Environment Agency

As the nuclear industry regulator on environmental matters, the Environment Agency is responsible for making sure that any future geological facility in England and Wales meets the required high standards for protecting people and the environment when it is being developed, while it is operating and after it is closed.

The Office for Nuclear Regulation's mission is to secure the protection of people and society from the hazards of the nuclear industry. It was formed on 1st April 2011 as an agency of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and is responsible for all nuclear sector regulation across the UK.

West Cumbria Sites Stakeholder Group (WCSSG)

The West Cumbria Sites Stakeholder Group is an independent body whose role is to provide public scrutiny of the nuclear industry in West Cumbria by providing an active, two-way channel of communication between the site operators, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and local stakeholders. WCSSG were initially full members of the Partnership but changed their status to Observing Member in June 2011.
